Why Wren football wanted to score early and often against Southside Christian

Thunderstorms loomed over Piedmont as Wren prepared to face Southside Christian in a high school football game on September 18. The Hurricanes, who had a 4-1 record, sought to score early and often, as coach Anthony Frate acknowledged the approaching weather delay. With only nine minutes and 38 seconds remaining in the first half, the game was halted by a lightning delay, extending for an hour and 32 minutes before resuming. Wren's coach expressed pride in his team's response to the challenging circumstances.

Southside Christian, with a 3-2 record, had lost its first game of the season to Boiling Springs with only a quarter played. Wren's strategy of starting fast paid off when their defense stopped Southside Christian's opening possession, giving them a 19-0 lead. Sloan Sanders then returned a punt 60 yards for another touchdown, solidifying the margin. With less than a minute on the scoreboard clock, the stadium had to be cleared due to lightning.

Frate explained that the team's decision to execute an onside kick was motivated by the need to secure another possession amid the approaching weather. Wren's offense averaged 37.2 points per game in this shortened display, despite playing for less than two quarters. The senior running back duo of Muntu Brown and Josiah Mosley demonstrated their impact, with Brown contributing 47 yards on six rushes and a touchdown, while Mosley added 25 yards on three carries.

Despite Mosley missing much of the previous season due to injury, he leads Wren in rushing yards and touchdowns, while Brown follows with 301 yards and six touchdowns. Frate emphasized the team's reliance on Mosley's absence, noting that Brown and Mosley form a strong 1-2 punch. Wren's next non-region game is scheduled for September 25 against Lugoff-Elgin, with their opening in Region 2-3A set for October 2 against Powdersville. Southside Christian begins their Region 2-2A play in Week 7 against Clinton.
