Watchman killed during attempted robbery at Migori gold leaching site

A 50-year-old security guard named David Kimori was fatally wounded during a robbery attempt at a gold leaching site in Nyatechi Village, Kuria West, Migori County, early Friday morning on September 18, 2026. The gang of eight men entered the facility around 1:50 a.m., armed with a rifle and machetes. Upon detecting the intruders, the watchmen raised an alarm which prompted the gunman to open fire.

Mr. Kimori suffered severe head and upper arm injuries from machete wounds. He was transported to Oasis Hospital in Kehancha Township for emergency treatment, but his condition worsened and he passed away at Migori Life Care Hospital. His body was subsequently transferred to Kehancha Sub-County Hospital mortuary for preservation pending a postmortem examination.

The perpetrators fled the scene on two motorcycles, leaving behind two spent 7.62mm cartridges as evidence. Police are actively searching for the suspects, who are still at large. In a separate incident near the chicken market in Kakamega County, a man in his twenties was found dead with apparent injuries to his head and legs. Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding his death and searching for the suspect involved.
