US and Denmark reach deal on Greenland, Trump says

The United States, Denmark, and Greenland have agreed on a deal allowing the US to develop a significant military presence in Greenland without any adversaries being able to establish their own bases on the island, according to President Donald Trump. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the agreement grants the US "forever" the ability to secure and defend Greenland and the United States.

This move comes as the US already holds nearly total overflight and basing rights in Greenland under a 1951 treaty. The president expressed satisfaction with the outcome, saying the deal would result in a large military presence on the island. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that the agreement recognizes Greenland's interests and its role in international cooperation.

However, details about the construction of new US bases or the agreement's impact on Greenland's aspirations for independence remain unclear. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that the deal permanently addresses the US's national security concerns regarding the island.
