UK actor Naomi Watts honoured at Spain film festival

SAN SEBASTIAN, September 19 - Renowned British actress Naomi Watts is set to be honored with the prestigious Donostia Award at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain. The award, previously bestowed upon luminaries such as Gregory Peck, Julia Roberts, Johnny Depp, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Sigourney Weaver, and Penelope Cruz, marks a significant milestone in Watts' illustrious career spanning nearly four decades.

Speaking at a news conference during the festival, the 57-year-old expressed her overwhelming gratitude for receiving the honor at this stage of her life. "It feels like such an incredible honour to get this award at this point in my life," she shared, acknowledging the countless hours of hard work and the privilege of collaborating with cinematic legends.

Watts, known for her captivating performances, has consistently sought out roles that challenge her and prompt audiences to reconsider their perspectives. Her breakthrough came in David Lynch's psychological thriller Mulholland Drive (2001), for which she was nominated twice for the Academy Award. In addition to her acclaimed roles in 21 Grams and The Impossible, Watts is an ardent supporter of women embracing natural aging, challenging industry norms that often pressure actresses to conform to unrealistic standards.

She reflected on the evolving attitudes within the film industry, noting the significant shift she has witnessed over the years. "I was told at the beginning that I better get my skates on because it all finishes at the age of 40 - and here we are today. I’m in my late 50s now… I do think things have changed," Watts remarked. Among the films competing for the Donostia Award at the Spanish festival are Fred Cavaye's adaptation of Victor Hugo's Les Miserables and Diego Luna's Ashes, a compelling work by the acclaimed Mexican director.
