UCLA football news: Derek Carr sees big things for Nico Iamaleava in the NFL

Former NFL quarterback Derek Carr, UCLA's special advisor, expressed high praise for UCLA quarterback Nico Iamaleava in a recent podcast. In the August segment, Carr described Iamaleava as "the greatest kid," lauding his impressive physical attributes and talent on the field. Standing 6’6″ and weighing 230 pounds, Carr was struck by Iamaleava's commanding presence when he first encountered him.

The quarterback's skills extended beyond football, as Carr recounted witnessing Iamaleava's impressive volleyball skills, including a notable 40+ inch vertical jump.

During practice, Carr observed Iamaleava's precision in throwing a deep cover zero pass while maintaining eye level with the ball. This demonstration of Iamaleava's command of the game further solidified Carr's belief that he would be a successful NFL prospect. Carr emphasized Iamaleava's coachability, noting that the player is open to learning and receptive to feedback from coaches and teammates alike.

Carr's admiration for Iamaleava's family also shone through, as he expressed his appreciation for Iamaleava's father, uncle, and brother, who is also part of the team.

Since his second season with the Bruins, Iamaleava has amassed 335 yards passing with no touchdowns and two interceptions, maintaining a 63% completion rate. He has also contributed to the team's rushing game, tallying 86 yards on 22 carries and scoring a touchdown.
