Too Many Teachers Here, Too Few There; School Merger Exposes Uneven Staffing At Sandipani Schools In Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh - The newly established Sandipani schools in the state are currently grappling with an unexpected surplus of teachers, after nearby government schools were relocated to their campuses. The state's school education system is currently experiencing a mismatch in teacher deployment. As part of its ongoing school restructuring exercise, the department has been merging smaller neighborhood schools with larger Sandipani campuses, bringing students and teachers from the schools being shifted into the Sandipani system.

The department has acknowledged that surplus teachers will be identified and relocated to other schools with vacancies, based on new student enrolments as per UDISE+ 2025-26 data. While the overall pupil-teacher ratio in Madhya Pradesh stands at 21:1, the statewide average conceals significant disparities between individual schools.

There are 2,269 single-teacher schools, affecting over 62,000 students. The school education department has directed districts to identify and address this surplus, with the counseling process to be completed by September 25.
