Thousands protest Kennedy Center demolition fears

Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., protesting the potential demolition of the iconic arts venue by the Trump administration. The crowd, many bearing signs and singing in unison, held hands to form a human chain around the center. Protesters carried placards that read "hands off Kennedy Center" and expressed their outrage at the removal of President Trump's name from the building, which they considered a breach of the institution's sanctity.

Neal Racioppo, a local resident, stated that Trump's actions were damaging to the Kennedy Center's potential and integrity. Local arts community member Bud Wilkinson emphasized the importance of preserving the Kennedy Center as a vital hub for artistic expression and a memorial to past presidents. The Kennedy Center, established in 1971, had been a central focus of Trump's plans for Washington since 2025.

Despite Trump's attempts to rename the institution and secure recognition for his administration, a judge recently ruled that the addition of his name was unlawful. Trump had suggested previously that the Kennedy Center might be demolished if his administration did not receive appropriate recognition, claiming the building was in a dangerous state.
