Takaichi, Trump to Hold Talks in New York on Tuesday Ahead of U.S.-China Summit

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and U.S. President Donald Trump are set to meet in New York on Tuesday, according to U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz. The talks will take place on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, with Takaichi in New York from Monday to Thursday and Trump in the city on Monday and Tuesday.

The meeting is considered crucial in the lead-up to the U.S.-China summit scheduled for Thursday. Takaichi is expected to voice her concerns over China's growing hegemonic tendencies to Trump and urge him to ensure that any agreement reached at the U.S.-China talks in Washington, DC, is sensitive to Japan's concerns. The agenda could also cover U.S. sanctions on International Criminal Court President Tomoko Akane, who is from Japan, and discussions on Japan's fiscal and monetary policies, as there are growing worries in Washington about Japan's long-term interest rates and the weakening of the yen.

Takaichi will be delivering her maiden speech at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday evening, where she is expected to advocate for multilateralism with the United Nations at its core. She is also planning to hold a press conference on Wednesday.
