Sod turned on new apartment complex for Old Kildonan

Blue blazers and black hard hats marked the occasion as developers and politicians participated in a sod-turning ceremony for a new apartment complex near the north Perimeter Highway in Winnipeg’s Old Kildonan neighbourhood. Rockport Investment Group Inc. is building the $40-million, 90-unit apartment building at 928 Fernbank Ave., which is expected to be completed within the next 24 months.

The project is part of a larger three-phase, $160-million initiative by Rockport to develop four multi-family residential developments and a centralized amenities building.

Rockport CEO DJ Trudeau expressed his delight at investing in the city, stating that the company is local and wants to contribute positively to the community. The building will feature one-, two-, and three-bedroom suites, with 148 parking spaces available. Amenities within the apartment complex include a 3,000-square-foot multi-purpose room, a 1,200-square-foot gym, and two 2,000-square-foot rooftop patios. Monthly rents will range from $1,100 to $2,500.

Phase 1 of the $160-million project will consist of four multi-family residential developments, with the centralized amenities building to open simultaneously with the first apartment block. The amenities building will house a large common room, yoga studio, fitness centre, gaming lounge, movie theatre, woodworking room, and golf simulators. Outdoor facilities such as a bocce ball court, pickleball courts, putting greens, and an outdoor dining space will also be available.

Winnipeg’s Mayor Scott Gillingham congratulated Rockport on the development, noting that housing starts in the city increased by more than 40 per cent in the first six months of 2026, marking the strongest start to a year in the city's history. The city has added 80,000 new residents in the past four years, and Gillingham believes the new development will help meet the growing demand for housing.

Coun. Devi Sharma, representing the Old Kildonan neighbourhood, praised Rockport's design for the 920 North project, stating that the development will be a welcome addition to Highland Pointe. Sharma emphasized that the company's thoughtful design aims to create a living experience that combines comfort, privacy, and opportunities for recreation, entertainment, and connections.
