Serie A clubs and Italy pay tribute to legend Sandro Mazzola

Sandro Mazzola, the legendary Inter and Italy football player, has passed away at the age of 83, leaving a lasting legacy in the sport. Tributes have been pouring in from Serie A clubs and Italy, honoring his immense contribution to the game.

Mazzola was widely regarded as one of Italy's greatest players, earning the second spot for the Ballon d'Or in 1971. He won two consecutive European Cups with Inter between 1963 and 1965, showcasing his exceptional skill and talent. During this period, Mazzola scored seven goals in the competition in 1963-64, including a brace in the Final against Real Madrid.

Mazzola's impact extended beyond Inter, as he also represented the Italian national team. He won the 1968 European Championship and reached the 1970 World Cup final, losing to Brazil led by Pelé. FIGC President Giovanni Malagò expressed his condolences, saying, "Farewell to Sandro Mazzola, champion, legend, and icon for generations of Italians."

Throughout Italy, several clubs paid tribute to Mazzola. A minute’s silence will be observed before each game in professional leagues, and Inter will wear a black armband in their away game at Roma. Torino even shared a touching tribute, featuring an iconic photograph of Mazzola's father, Valentino, tying the young Sandro's football boots. Valentino Mazzola, a football legend and captain of the famous Grande Torino team, tragically died in the Superga air disaster in 1949 when Sandro was only seven years old.

In a statement on behalf of the European football community, it was stated that Mazzola's passing was deeply mourned, with four league titles, two European Cups, and two Intercontinental Cups to his name, as well as the EURO 1968 trophy with Italy. Juventus expressed their respect and sincere condolences for his passing.
