Sarawak, Penang at focus of moves to boost birth rates

Malaysia's fertility rate has declined to 1.6% as of 2024, according to official statistics. A fertility rate above 2.1% indicates population growth, while a rate below 2.1% suggests eventual population decline and aging. The government plans to give greater focus to Penang and Sarawak in its efforts to boost Malaysia's low birth rate, announced Nancy Shukri, the minister for women, family and community development.

In-vitro fertilisation (IVF) is among the measures the ministry intends to take to assist couples dealing with fertility difficulties, with fertility-related programs receiving greater emphasis in the coming year. Nancy Shukri emphasized the importance of fertility programs due to Malaysia's low population and the need to increase it. The minister stated that Sarawak and Penang are among the states that require special attention to raise the birth rate.

Although fertility programs were already in place, the ministry plans to place more emphasis on them next year as part of its efforts to encourage young people to have children. Budget proposals for fertility-related programs have been included in the ministry's budget submission. Additionally, studies on fertility rates have been conducted to support efforts in formulating measures to increase birth rates in Malaysia, as reported by Borneo Post.
