QNL hosts panel discussion on role of maritime trade in shaping British diplomacy

Qatar National Library recently hosted a panel discussion titled "Diplomacy and Influence: A Reading of the British Presence in the Gulf". The event brought together academics, students and researchers to delve into the historical significance of early maritime trade networks in shaping British diplomacy within the region. The East India Company's extensive trade routes across the Arabian Gulf and its robust connections with British-Indian trade networks were highlighted as foundational elements for broader regional engagement.

The discussion explored how maritime treaties and commercial activities provided essential geopolitical insights, extending British influence beyond mere trade, especially in the face of competition from other regional powers. Dr Aisha Hadi al-Rashdi, an Assistant Dean for Social Sciences and Humanities at Qatar University, provided expert commentary on the role of diplomatic tools in strengthening British-Gulf relations through soft power.

She emphasized the importance of the panel in fostering dialogue and the exchange of diverse perspectives on the history of British-Gulf relations. Dr Hadi al-Rashdi noted that these conversations allow for a reexamination of history from various angles, thereby enhancing our understanding by incorporating a broader range of experiences and viewpoints, including those from the Gulf.

She also stressed that such discussions help connect historical events with contemporary issues, thereby encouraging thoughtful research, responsible dialogue and a deeper appreciation of the region's history and international relations among the public, researchers and younger generations. The panel was moderated by Community Engagement Specialist at the Heritage Library, Ikhlas Ahmed.

She showcased the Heritage Library's extensive archival resources, which offered attendees a tangible connection to the rich history of Qatari-British relations and regional diplomacy.
