QNA launches training course on advanced journalistic editing skills

Qatar News Agency (QNA) has introduced an advanced training course focused on journalistic editing skills, commencing on Sunday in line with its 2026 training strategy. The four-day program is open to QNA staff members and personnel from government bodies. The primary objective of the course is to hone participants' journalistic editing abilities, ensuring the production of top-quality media content and improved editorial standards across media and governmental institutions.

Led by Dr. Nabil al-Mariri, a training adviser at QNA, the course delves into various aspects of journalistic editing. It covers the fundamental concepts of news and news values, their correlation with editorial policies, news sources, and mechanisms for evaluation and editorial decision-making. Participants will also explore the stages involved in crafting a news story and the editor's role in producing journalistic content.

The curriculum encompasses the structure of a news story, basic principles of news writing, techniques for writing headlines, leads, and body text. It also emphasizes the significance of background and context in augmenting a news story, as well as the primary journalistic formats and the criteria for selecting them based on the content's nature and target audience.

The course includes specialized sessions on news reports, highlighting the distinctions between news stories and reports, their purposes, and how they are structured.

Additional topics include language and style, text quality, and the attributes of journalistic language, all aimed at elevating professional performance according to established editorial standards. This course is part of QNA's ongoing efforts, through the QNA Training Center, to bolster media and national capabilities, reinforce professional skills in journalistic editing, and align with the demands of contemporary media work.
