PM urges China and US to strike deal in AI race

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called on China and the United States, the leading nations in the artificial intelligence race, to reach an agreement on the technology and ensure humans remain in control. Albanese also hinted at the possibility of changing copyright laws to attract AI investment in Australia. The PM will be discussing global regulations to govern AI development at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly.

Speaking at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California, Albanese emphasized the need for a coordinated global framework, stating that AI is a global phenomenon and the development is moving rapidly. He urged the US and China to cooperate, similar to the 1970 nuclear non-proliferation treaty, to prevent the spread of AI beyond human control.

President Trump, however, opposes any slowdown, arguing it would benefit China. Albanese, in a previous interview, noted that writers, musicians, and other creatives would retain control over their intellectual property and be compensated for any use of their work in AI models. He is open to a "opt-out" model, giving Australians the choice to protect their work.
