Philippine Consulate in Dubai braces for passport renewal surge

Dubai: The Philippine Consulate General in Dubai is bracing for a surge in passport renewal applications as the first wave of 10-year passports reach their expiration dates. Consul General Ambrosio Brian Enciso III cautioned that the influx may begin as early as next year, given that Filipinos traveling internationally must maintain passports with a minimum six-month validity.

"The first batch of 10-year passports will expire in 2028," explained Enciso. "We anticipate more clients seeking passport renewal services as passports must remain valid during travel."

Currently processing around 80 to 100 applications daily, the consulate serves Filipinos across Dubai and the Northern Emirates, including Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah. With heightened demand anticipated, the consulate is reviewing staffing to bolster its capacity. "We are evaluating how to reconfigure our consular team to better serve our clients," stated Enciso.

To prepare for increased workload, consular staff recently completed a training session focused on passport processing and administrative procedures. The program encompassed a review of application requirements and the legal framework governing passport issuance and renewal, as well as discussion of real-world scenarios to ensure consistent application handling per established protocols. This initiative aims to enhance both the technical expertise of personnel and the systems supporting passport processing.

The Department of Foreign Affairs began issuing passports with 10-year validity in 2018, surpassing the previous shorter validity period. The consulate has advised Filipinos in Dubai and the Northern Emirates to verify their passport expiration dates and renew promptly, particularly those with international travel intentions. Early renewal can also help applicants circumvent longer wait times as demand is projected to rise in the years ahead.
