On Myanmar, Malaysia must use its diplomatic leverage wisely — Syed Hamid Albar

On September 19, this author explains why Malaysia must carefully consider its diplomatic approach to the Myanmar situation, particularly concerning the Rohingya. The government seeks a practical and enduring solution, but diplomacy goes beyond simply opening doors to anyone. It involves knowing one's goals, building leverage, and securing commitments before making concessions.

Inviting Min Aung Hlaing, the current military leader, may seem like a diplomatic move, but the author argues that such an invitation should follow meaningful political progress, not precede it. A high-level meeting with Hlaing does not guarantee a political settlement, as the military does not control most of Rakhine State, where the Rohingya reside. The Arakan Army, a different armed group, holds de facto control over the majority of the State.

The author highlights the ongoing violence and repression against the Rohingya, with no indication that the Myanmar government is considering amending the Citizenship Law that stripped them of their citizenship. The Rohingya are also denied their ethnic identity, being referred to as "Bengali" instead. The situation remains deeply insecure, with no legal protections in place.

Forcing the Rohingya to join an ethnic conflict by recruiting them into the military risks further insecurity and hostility. Repatriation cannot be achieved by forcing displaced people into conflict. The author stresses that Malaysia's credibility and commitment to international law must be maintained, citing the International Court of Justice's provisional measures and the International Criminal Court's ongoing investigation into the atrocities committed against the Rohingya.
