NPR journalist Rose Friedman passed away at the age of 38 after a battle with cancer. She had worked as an editor and reporter for approximately 15 years, contributing significantly to NPR's arts and cultural coverage. Friedman, who was an editor until the end, expressed her desire for her obituary to highlight her role as a shop steward for SAG-AFTRA, the union that represents NPR's editorial workers.

Her proudest achievement, she said, was helping convince NPR to increase its paid parental leave. Friedman succumbed to cancer at her home in New York City on September 17. The exact date of her cancer diagnosis remains unknown, though she had surgery in 2025. However, whether this surgery was related to her cancer diagnosis remains unclear.

Her friend and colleague, Natalie Winston, fondly remembered Friedman's adventurous spirit. Winston recounted how Friedman often surprised friends with spontaneous explorations, such as cooking and dining together in Chinatown, taking a ferry to Ikea in Brooklyn, and indulging in daring culinary experiences like ordering an entire pig's head and a spleen sandwich.

Friedman and her partner, Andrew Anastasi, were avid travelers and adventurous food enthusiasts. Anastasi, too, paid tribute to Friedman, praising her curiosity, joy, and care both in her work and in the lives of those around her. Friedman is survived by her two children, her parents, her sisters, and her partner. Her career began as an editorial assistant at NPR Books in her early 20s, and she later became NPR's lead reporter for the Harvey Weinstein trial in 2020.

Friedman's research during her college years won her the Barbara Wertheimer Prize in Labor History from the New York Labor History Association.
