Nick Saban explains why Ohio State lost its edge at half vs. Texas

Former Alabama coach Nick Saban provided insight into why Ohio State's momentum faltered at halftime during their 24-23 loss to Texas. Saban explained that when a team leads at halftime, they tend to become overly confident and lose their competitive edge. At the time of the Ohio State-Texas game, the Buckeyes were up 20-3 at the break and received the opening possession of the second half.

However, Texas struggled to get going in the second half, turning the first two offensive plays into turnovers that allowed Ohio State to score. As the second half progressed, Ohio State's execution deteriorated on both offense and defense while Texas gained momentum. Saban noted that he used to take notes during halftime to identify players he would reprimand, but without a scoreboard, it was impossible to pinpoint specific mistakes.

He emphasized that losing one's edge in a game leads to a loss of momentum, making it extremely difficult to regain it. Following the defeat, Ohio State dropped from No. 1 to No. 6 in both the US LBM Coaches poll and the Associated Press poll, while Texas emerged as the top-ranked team in each poll.
