NATO defence chiefs to decide whether to tap Gen. Carignan for senior NATO post

NATO’s top military officials are convening in Denmark amidst escalating concerns over Russian hybrid threats. This comes following Poland’s Prime Minister expressing worry that the nation might face Russian drone assaults in the upcoming months. The meeting of NATO’s military committee serves as a platform to review discussions from the high-level Ankara summit in July.

At that gathering, NATO reiterated its pledge to bolster defense spending, especially in Europe, aiming to enhance defense infrastructure, develop stronger defensive capabilities, and advance technology to tackle evolving warfare dynamics, particularly concerning hybrid and drone threats. The meeting arrives amid heightened pressure on European partners to bolster their own defense capabilities on the continent, as the United States appears to be shifting focus away from Europe.

Recent reports suggest the Pentagon is contemplating a reduction of about one-third of US forces from Europe, which is perceived as intensifying pressure on European nations at a time when they confront mounting Russian threats. In recent days, Denmark reported that Russian flares from a warship were discharged at one of its helicopters, with both sides blaming each other for reckless actions.

In Lithuania, a NATO jet successfully shot down a drone, believed to originate from Belarus, a staunch Russian ally. These hybrid threats are viewed as a significant concern, not only among NATO allies but also within the European Union. This issue was highlighted by Ursula von der Leyen in her recent State of the Union address, where she noted that Russia's hybrid threats are transitioning from a primarily hybrid and abstract risk to a more tangible and pressing concern for European citizens.
