Mykhailo Mudryk preferred to join Arsenal over Chelsea in bombshell revelation

In January 2023, Ukrainian forward Mykhailo Mudryk opted to join Arsenal over Chelsea in a surprising announcement. Both English Premier League sides had expressed interest in signing the player during the winter transfer window of the previous season. Ultimately, Chelsea secured his services by agreeing a £88 million deal with his Ukrainian club, Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Ukrainian club's director of football, Darijo Srna, revealed that Mudryk had been persuaded by Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta during negotiations. However, Chelsea offered a more lucrative sum, which led Shakhtar to sell Mudryk to the London club. Srna explained, "Misha talked to Arteta. I talked to the Chelsea coach. And, probably, at that moment he liked Arteta more."

Despite being hailed as a significant boost for Chelsea at the time, Mudryk struggled to meet expectations, netting just 10 goals in 73 appearances across all competitions. In December 2024, the 25-year-old faced a career-threatening setback when he was suspended for four years following a positive drugs test. While he has been cleared to resume playing this summer, Mudryk has since moved to Tottenham Hotspur on a season-long loan deal with a £75m buy option.

He made his debut for his new club in a goalless draw against Nottingham Forest, but subsequently suffered an ankle injury in training that will sideline him for several weeks.
