Munich’s Oktoberfest roars to life as the mayor taps the first keg

Munich's iconic Oktoberfest celebrations officially commenced on Saturday, marking the 191st edition of the world's largest folk festival. The festivities were inaugurated by Mayor Dominik Krause, who tapped the first keg with just two swift motions and the iconic cry, "O'zapft is" — translated to "It's been tapped." Thousands of attendees, dressed in Bavarian dirndls and lederhosen, rushed to secure prime seating in the beer tents on Munich's Theresienwiese fairground, greeted by the sounds of brass music and the aroma of freshly drawn beer.

Alongside the main attraction, the festival also offered popular delicacies like pretzels, pork roast, and sausages.

Over a span of 16 days, from October 3 to October 4, an estimated 6 million visitors are anticipated to flock to Oktoberfest, with the majority hailing from Munich and southern Germany. However, millions of guests are also expected to travel from other parts of Germany and around the world. In response to the festival's overcrowding last year, German authorities have reinforced security measures.

AI-powered cameras have been installed to detect large crowds early on, and a ban on knives, flying objects, and drones has been enforced. Entry checks are in place, with large bags prohibited, and smoking marijuana is strictly prohibited. Around 600 police officers, in addition to Bavarian riot police, specialized pickpocket investigators, and international task forces from eight countries, are on duty to ensure a safe and secure environment.

Despite the heightened security, revelers remain undeterred, with Ava Laboncher, a visitor from the United States, expressing her excitement about the celebrations. She remarked, "I love it, I think the vibes are super high, it’s amazing." Another visitor, Ben Dawson from New Zealand, promised to indulge in plenty of beer and promised to return for more tomorrow.
