MIT Report Finds That AI Is Leading to “Cognitive Surrender” Among Students

As AI technology continues to make its presence felt in various facets of our daily lives, students are witnessing the consequences of an overreliance on this innovative tool. Some students go to extreme measures to leverage AI in their assessments while evading detection. Simultaneously, exam scores are plummeting as students grapple with the temptation to use AI as an easy solution.

The implications go beyond lower grades. Some college students are losing the ability to engage in class discussions, which is a concerning outcome of entrusting their cognitive faculties to AI. MIT researchers issued a report last month on the state of education, highlighting that the trend is leading to "cognitive surrender," wherein students cede their intellectual agency to AI-generated outputs.

The report states, "As AI-enabled technologies become more capable, it will be possible—and tempting—to offload more 'thinking' tasks to them; not surprisingly, students told us the temptation was greatest when they feared they would miss a deadline."

However, there are emerging signs that overdependence on chatbots can have adverse effects, such as diminishing critical thinking, weakening memory, eroding confidence, and undermining mastery. This is a contentious issue, as educational institutions continue to embrace AI despite concerns raised by educators who have observed their AI-dependent students struggling in the classroom.

University of Hawaii president Wendy Hensel told the New York Times, "The right answer to AI is not just 'no.' It can’t be. It has to be approached with curiosity and understanding of the implications."

Numerous studies have warned of the detrimental impact of excessive reliance on AI chatbots on education. Students are not being taught to internalize their learning, as one MIT study revealed last year. Coauthor and MIT researcher Nataliya Kos’myna stated to the NYT, "You basically didn’t engage any of the memory networks that would actually help you remember."

University administrators argue that equipping students for an AI-driven future is crucial, a stance that might exacerbate the erosion of their cognitive thinking skills. In contrast, some institutions take a more stringent stance, like the University of Chicago's law school, which recently announced a ban on phones, tablets, and laptops in first-year courses.
