Meet Eagles’ new boys for Madagascar, G’Bissau AFCON qualifiers

Al Ittihad's forward George Ilenikhena, Alverca's left-back Isaac James, and LASK's forward Moses Usor have all received their first call-ups to the Super Eagles for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. Head coach Eric Chelle unveiled a 24-man squad on Thursday, with Nigeria set to host Madagascar in Uyo on September 25 and travel to face Guinea-Bissau on September 29. Co-hosts Tanzania also join the group.

George Ilenikhena, a 20-year-old Lagos native, has had a successful season with Al Ittihad, scoring six goals and providing two assists in nine matches across all competitions. Despite initial struggles adapting to Al Ittihad, his form has improved, and his inclusion may be due to the absence of Victor Osimhen and Paul Onuachu due to injury. Ilenikhena, who previously represented France at youth level, has now chosen Nigeria as his permanent national team.

Isaac James, a 22-year-old Portugal-based left-back, has received the call-up due to the injury of Zaidu Sanusi, leaving Chelle with limited options at his position. James has impressed in his club's role and hopes to replicate that performance for the national team. He will also be part of the squad for the friendly match against Russia on October 6.

Moses Usor, a 24-year-old forward from LASK, had a stellar 2025/26 season, helping LASK secure both the league and cup double, as well as qualification for the Champions League for the first time in the club's history. The 24-year-old's exceptional season has caught the attention of Nigerian selectors, and he is expected to contribute to the team's campaign against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
