Martin wins Austrian MotoGP sprint after Acosta crash

Jorge Martin of Spain claimed victory in the Austrian MotoGP sprint race, reclaiming the championship lead from fellow Spanish rider Marc Marquez. The Spanish rider took the early lead from pole position, edging out Marquez in qualifying. However, Pedro Acosta of Spain took the lead on the opening lap of the sprint race and appeared on track for a second consecutive win.

Acosta's lead was short-lived, though, as he slid off his bike with just four laps remaining, resulting in the rider’s retirement. Martin capitalized on Acosta's mishap, moving three points clear of Marquez in the overall standings. Marquez finished the sprint in second place, followed by Marco Bezzecchi of Aprilia. Martin expressed his gratitude for Acosta's crash, acknowledging that he would have secured second place had it not occurred.

The 2024 world champion stressed that he never gave up and pushed to his maximum, eventually emerging victorious. The event took place at the Red Bull Ring race track in Spielberg, Austria. Japan's Ai Ogura secured fourth place, followed by Alex Marquez and former world champion Francesco Bagnaia. Martin had secured his third pole position of the season earlier in the day, narrowly defeating Marquez by just 0.015 seconds in qualifying.

Acosta's front row teammate, Marquez, has been challenging for the title, winning five of the last seven races. Acosta, racing at KTM's home circuit, aims to secure his first MotoGP win on Sunday, after which he plans to leave the Austrian team to join Marquez at Ducati for the upcoming season.
