Malaysia records 102 deceased organ donors so far in 2026, but 12,575 still await transplants, says MOH

KUALA TERENGGANU, Sept 19 — The Ministry of Health (MOH) announced that 102 deceased organ donors were recorded between January and August 2026, marking an increase from the 89 donors in 2025. Deputy Director-General of Health (Medical) Datuk Dr Azman Yacob revealed that both figures indicate a rise in public awareness of organ donation, yet it is still far from satisfactory.

As of July 2026, there are still 12,575 patients awaiting transplants. Dr Azman pointed out that countries like the UAE, Spain, and others have higher organ acceptance rates, reaching 20 to 30 per cent per million population. The theme for this year's National Organ Donation Awareness Week (MKPO) 2026 is “Warisku, Hormati Ikrarku” (My Heirs, Honour My Pledge), emphasizing the importance of honoring a person's wish to donate organs after death and the crucial role of family support in the donation process.

Despite 450,000 individuals registered as organ donors, actual donations remain low due to families having the final say on the donation. Dr Azman highlighted that awareness among family members is crucial to respecting the donor's wishes. The Health Ministry plans to enhance organ donor numbers through the National Transplant Council, better coordination, and increased engagement with religious institutions to clarify any misconceptions about organ donation and its alignment with religious requirements.
