Luxembourg Airport Halts Flights Over Unauthorized Drones

Luxembourg's main international airport briefly halted flight operations on Friday, September 18, following the detection of unauthorized drones near and over the airfield, according to authorities. The suspension was implemented to safeguard passengers, staff, crew members, and aircraft. Flights resumed the following morning, but travelers were advised to expect delays and disruptions as airlines and ground services worked to restore normal schedules.

The airport's operator stated that they were monitoring the situation in conjunction with relevant authorities, air traffic management services, airlines, and operational partners. The incident led to localized diversions and holding patterns for inbound commercial traffic on Friday evening before the airport was cleared to reopen.

Authorities emphasized that security teams were working closely with national aviation regulators, law enforcement, and regional air traffic control agencies to investigate the incident and prevent future occurrences. This event comes amid heightened security concerns at European airports, where unauthorized drone activity near vital commercial and military transport hubs has become more frequent.

The disruption in Luxembourg follows a series of airspace security incidents across Europe linked to unauthorized unmanned aircraft. On September 15, Italian fighter jets from Lithuania's Šiauliai Air Base intercepted and shot down a Russian drone carrying an explosive charge in Lithuania's airspace, likely bound for Ukraine. Lithuania's Defense Minister confirmed that the explosive payload was safely neutralized.

This interception followed a brief halt in operations at Vilnius Airport on September 13 after the detection of an unidentified airborne contact, which was later identified as a flock of birds by NATO reconnaissance.
