LIV Golf’s financial crisis: Will LIV Golf South Africa 2027 still happen?

The financial crisis engulfing LIV Golf has cast a shadow over the future of the league, particularly concerning the planned LIV Golf South Africa tournament in 2027. This uncertainty stems from the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) pulling its primary financial support, leading to LIV Golf filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. As a result, the league's access to vast amounts of capital has vanished, causing doubts about whether top players like Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm will return if and when the league re-launches.

These players are reportedly owed millions in unpaid sums, potentially pushing them away from rejoining LIV Golf.

The significance of South Africa as an international market for LIV Golf remains intact, as confirmed by an open letter from LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil. The letter reiterates the league's commitment to preserving key markets such as Africa, Australia, and Asia within the revamped LIV Golf 2.0 framework. South Africa's success at the inaugural South African event, which drew over 100,000 spectators over four days, stands as a testament to the league's appeal beyond traditional golf audiences.

The event outshone even the Nedbank Golf Challenge, historically regarded as the continent's major championship, with its peak attendance reaching 76,000 spectators in 2019.

LIV Golf's distinctive appeal to non-purest golf enthusiasts has been its key selling point, offering post-round concerts featuring top-tier artists and a novel team-based structure. Despite criticisms regarding the competitive edge of the tour, the presence of global superstars consistently guaranteed massive crowds. DeChambeau, a fan favorite in South Africa prior to winning a playoff against Rahm, remains a central figure in the league's potential return.
