Key defensive starter ruled out for Patriots ahead of Week 2 matchup

The New England Patriots have announced that starting cornerback Carlton Davis III will miss Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers due to a neck injury, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss. Davis' absence will force the team to modify their secondary plans for the crucial matchup. He did not participate in any practices throughout the week due to the injury.

In their previous game, a Week 1 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Davis recorded three total tackles. Davis played a significant role in the Patriots' journey to the Super Bowl last season, but the team must now grapple with his loss in Week 2. Charles Woods will likely shoulder a larger portion of the outside cornerback workload, while Marcus Jones is also capable of stepping in as the outside cornerback when not positioned as the primary slot corner.

Jones' versatility, being able to work both inside and outside, will provide New England with flexibility in dealing with the various offensive schemes the Steelers may employ. Kindle Vildor stands ready on the practice squad should the Patriots need an additional active defensive back.
