Japan must not lose money ‘for nothing’, Asian Olympic official says as Nagoya Games open amid room complaints

Nagoya, Japan, on September 19 - Japan's decision to host the Asian Games utilizing unconventional venues like huts and a cruise ship, rather than constructing a traditional athletes' village, has been commended by a senior Olympic official. Despite concerns over the limited accommodation for over 17,000 participants, OCA Director General Husain Al-Musallam lauded Japan's innovative approach.

Over 4,000 athletes are staying aboard the cruise liner Costa Serena, while 2,000 more reside in wooden huts erected in Nagoya's port. The remainder are accommodated in hotels spread across Nagoya and Aichi prefecture. Al-Musallam emphasized the importance of considering the post-Games financial implications for the host nation, suggesting that Japan's strategy could serve as a model for future cost-effective major events.
