Consequently, the future will likely involve near off-grid energy systems, where households are largely self-sufficient annually but remain connected for those rare moments when they cannot rely on local generation and storage. This hybrid model appears to be the more realistic option for most Australians. However, this shift raises a challenging policy question: households occasionally using the grid may still expect it to deliver instant and reliable power, prompting a need to adjust network tariffs to prevent financially disadvantaged individuals from being penalized.
Simultaneously, those who invest in renewable energy technology should be rewarded through government incentives and rebates. Australians are no longer questioning whether they can leave the grid but rather whether they are better off bearing the costs of off-grid living or relying on a shared network. The near off-grid future may offer a middle ground.
