Ingebrigtsen pipped to 5km road gold in Copenhagen

In a thrilling finish, Dawit Seare of Eritrea secured the gold medal in the men's 5km race at the World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, just edging out Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen. Ingebrigtsen, 26, was participating in his sixth race of an injury-riddled season, having recently triumphed on the track at the Ultimate Athletics Championships in Budapest.

Seare, hailing from Africa's 5,000m champion, found a reserve of energy in the final stretch to overtake the Norwegian and claim victory in 12 minutes and 56 seconds. Fellow Eritrean Saymon Amanuel secured bronze.

In the women's 5km, Likina Amebaw of Ethiopia showcased dominance, breaking early and claiming the gold in a decisive manner, six days after her triumph in the 5,000m event in Budapest. Kitonga of Kenya, trailing by seven seconds, secured the silver, while Davies of Australia claimed the bronze. On the men's side, Germany's Robert Farken was the surprise winner of the men's mile, defeating American Yared Nuguse in a close finish.

Jake Heyward of Britain completed the road in an impressive 3:55.76. French athlete Agathe Guillemot took the women's mile title in 4:22.74, the fastest time in the world this year on the road, ahead of Ethiopia's Freweyni Hailu. Kenyan Mirriam Cherop secured third place, while Katie Snowden of Great Britain placed 16th. The half-marathon titles will be determined on Sunday, as part of the two-day running festival in Copenhagen.
