In a first, top European design prize awarded to €20 uniform for China’s delivery drivers

For the first time in its history, a top European design prize has been awarded to a €20 uniform for China's delivery drivers. The award, presented by the French Design Award, recognizes the innovative design of the Taobao Shangou uniform worn by Alibaba's instant commerce and on-demand delivery service. This marks a significant recognition for frontline workers as it is the first time the award has been given for a design targeting such workers.

The uniform was designed with the help of Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba Group Holding, who played a key role in the design process. The team behind the uniform, led by Yang Tao, included a restaurant owner and a former dancer, and aimed to combine style with practical concerns such as visibility in traffic and durability against sweat and rain. The uniform costs just over 20 euros, making it more affordable than other outdoor clothing options.

The delivery sector in China, which employs around 200 million gig workers, has gained more public attention after viral videos of delivery riders collapsing from exhaustion sparked public outcry. The State Council of China has called for stronger labour protections for these workers in a 12-point plan issued in April, including measures such as stronger protections in extreme weather, prompt and fair payment of wages, and a more robust social security system.

Alibaba, the owner of the South China Morning Post, is praised for its contribution to the design of this uniform.
