‘If the world, Africa honoured Nkrumah as the Millennium Man, why are we not doing same?’ – Asiedu Nketia

National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has questioned why Ghanaians are not honoring Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah to the same extent as he has been recognized worldwide. Speaking at NkrumahFest 2026 in Nkroful, Mr Nketia expressed his concern over efforts to undermine Nkrumah's image and legacy. He asked, "If the world and Africa have honored him as the ‘Man of the Millennium’, why are we not doing that as Ghanaians?"

According to Mr Nketia, Nkrumah deserved recognition as the founder of Ghana due to his pivotal role in uniting the various territories that now make up the nation. Before Nkrumah's leadership, the areas that constitute modern Ghana were separate political entities, including the Gold Coast Colony, the Ashanti Kingdom, the Northern Territories, and Trans-Volta Togoland. He emphasized that it was Nkrumah's leadership and political efforts that brought these territories together to form the Ghana we know today.

Mr Nketia contended that the historical struggles for independence were primarily centered in the Gold Coast Colony, while other regions had distinct political arrangements. He highlighted Nkrumah's unique contribution to the formation of Ghana, distinguishing him from other nationalists involved in the independence struggle. "No other politician or nationalist can compare themselves to Dr Kwame Nkrumah," Mr Nketia stated firmly.

NkrumahFest 2026, held in Nkroful to mark Nkrumah's 117th birthday, serves as a platform to "purge" the country of what Mr Nketia perceives as the shame of disparaging Nkrumah's legacy. He expressed gratitude to former Minister for Roads and Highways and Ellembelle MP Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah for organizing the event and confirmed his ongoing involvement in NkrumahFest celebrations.
