Humanitarian aid must lead to recovery, prosperity – Minister

Nigeria's Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Doro, has announced that the country will present its humanitarian and poverty reduction agenda at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) 81 in New York. The event, themed "Beyond Assistance: Reducing Poverty, Advancing Protection and Building Shared Prosperity," will focus on connecting humanitarian response, human mobility, social protection, poverty reduction, and economic inclusion.

Dr. Doro stated that while humanitarian assistance is essential for saving lives, it must also become a bridge to recovery, resilience, and prosperity. He emphasized that Nigeria will use the global platform to advance the proposition that assistance alone cannot sustainably address poverty and vulnerability. The emerging approach, known as the One Humanitarian One Poverty Response System (OHOPRS), aims to better connect humanitarian response, social protection, poverty reduction, and economic inclusion through a household-centred approach.
