HK hopes to ace next level with Victoria Park revamp

Hong Kong is considering transforming Victoria Park into a venue that can accommodate larger-scale tennis tournaments and other major sports and entertainment events, as part of a redevelopment plan aimed at boosting the local economy. The government envisions converting the Victoria Park Centre Court and other surrounding facilities into an all-weather, multi-purpose venue capable of hosting ATP 500-level tennis events, with potential expansion to ATP 1000-level events if resources permit.

The proposed seating capacity would be at least 7,000, with a possible increase to 10,000 seats. Secretary for Culture, Sports, and Tourism Rosanna Law highlighted Victoria Park's central location, positive response to recent events, and strong demand for sports facilities, making it a suitable candidate for such a redevelopment.

The plan also includes the possibility of hosting basketball, volleyball, and other ball sports at the venue. Law stated that the government aims for the site to host at least 60% non-local performances, reflecting its suitability for world-tour-scale events, while recognizing other venues like the Hong Kong Coliseum may cater more to local performances.
