“He can adapt”: Gary Pallister questions United’s left-sided centre-back fixation – exclusive

Gary Pallister, a former Manchester United defender, has expressed his belief that the club should prioritize their best centre-backs, rather than fixating on whether they are naturally suited to the right or left side. In an exclusive interview with The Peoples Person, Pallister shared his own experience playing as a right-footed player on the left during his nine-season tenure at Old Trafford, winning four league titles.

Pallister emphasizes that while a left-sided centre-back could provide natural balance, it should not be a prerequisite for a good defender. He states that each manager would appreciate having a 'classy' left centre-back, but it is challenging to find truly exceptional ones. If a top-tier centre-half is available, Pallister suggests it would be more than sufficient to play them on the left if they are right-footed.

He also mentions that modern pitches make playing out from the back easier, making the need for a left-sided centre-back less critical. Pallister believes that the Manchester United head coach, Michael Carrick, should focus on having the best defenders available rather than the position a player naturally leans towards. He adds that if a good centre-back is available, they can adapt to any position.
