‘Go home and make your own hot water’: Singapore diner slammed over 50-cent charge complaint

A diner in Singapore has questioned the practice of charging 50 cents for a small glass of warm water at a local eatery. The complainant took to the Complaint Singapore (Anonymous) Facebook group to share a picture of the receipt that displayed the unexpected charge. The diner expressed shock, asking, "Is water really that expensive in Singapore?"

The incident quickly gained attention, with commenters offering varying perspectives on the matter. Some criticized the diner for making a fuss over a small charge, pointing out that the cost of running an eatery is much higher than just providing water. Others suggested the diner could open their own business and serve water free of charge to generate profits.

However, some commenters explained the reasons behind charging for warm water, such as the costs associated with heating up the water using electricity, the expenses of the food and beverage (F&B) rental, and the salaries of the staff who serve and clean the cups. Despite the criticism, there were also a few sympathetic commenters who related to the original poster's frustration.

One user called it a "tremendous day robbery," while another simply agreed, sharing a receipt showing they had also been charged for water, in this case, 30 cents.
