Ghana Navy strengthens operational readiness with specialist seaman gunners training

The Ghana Navy has bolstered its operational preparedness and personnel competency through the successful completion of the Seaman Gunners First Class Specialist Qualification Course 1-26. Organized by the School of Maritime Operations (SMOPS) of the Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC), this course provided sailors with advanced knowledge in naval gunnery, weapons systems, maritime security, and leadership.

The graduation ceremony, held at the NAVTRAC Parade Square, celebrated the completion of a rigorous training program aimed at preparing sailors for effective service across various Navy establishments.

During the course, students acquired crucial skills in areas such as Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS), naval gunnery, guided weapons, and naval drills. The curriculum blended theoretical instruction with hands-on exercises, ensuring that participants gained both the technical expertise and operational competence needed to proficiently handle naval weapons and perform maritime duties.

Practical training included sea-firing exercises and range work, leadership presentations, and a simulated summary trial proceedings. Students were also briefed on the Commanding Officer’s Request for Promotion process, which deepened their understanding of personnel administration and readiness for leadership roles as Coxswains.

Guest of Honour and Training Coordinator, Naval Captain David Delali Kpetigo, praised the graduates for their dedication and urged them to apply their newly acquired skills and knowledge to perform effectively in their units. He stressed the importance of professionalism, sound judgment, and a strong sense of responsibility in fulfilling their duties.

Captain Kpetigo challenged the graduates to uphold the values and standards of the Ghana Navy, demonstrating strong leadership as they took on additional responsibilities that would involve guiding, supervising, and supporting their peers.

The graduation ceremony drew the Commanding Officers of SMOPS, the Supply Application School (SAS), and the Naval Recruit Training School (NRTS), along with officers, Coxswains, Senior Rates, Ratings, and Defence Civilian Staff. The Ghana Navy Regimental Band also took part in the event, underscoring the significance of this milestone in the Navy's ongoing commitment to developing technically proficient, operationally ready, and leadership-ready personnel.
