Garmin’s (GRMN) New Autopilot Signals Where Growth Is Headed

On September 1, Garmin unveiled SmartDrive, the first sailboat autopilot built with a brushless linear actuator and built-in ECU. This launch demonstrates Garmin's continued focus on unique niches within the watercraft industry, despite other segments experiencing growth. The SmartDrive system pairs with the Reactor 40 Corepack to provide up to 1,050 pounds of thrust for sailboats and catamarans up to 45 feet in length.

It features fewer cables and external components than older models, allowing for direct replacement of existing boats. SmartDrive is compatible with Garmin multifunction displays and can be operated via wireless remote, APK 10 keypad, or Quatix marine smartwatches. This ecosystem integration mirrors the success of Garmin's marine business, which saw a 14% year-over-year revenue increase in Q2 2026, reaching $341.4 million.

The segment's strong performance is backed by a 61% gross margin and 29% operating margin, contributing $100 million in quarterly operating income. The overall company's Q2 revenue reached a record $2.02 billion, up 11% year-over-year, with operating income increasing 30% to $616 million due to a 62.4% gross margin expansion. However, the SmartDrive autopilot's $3,499.99 price point and 45-foot limit cap its potential market reach.

While the marine segment remains a growth driver, its reliance on discretionary spending and the company's broader mixed results in other divisions highlight the need for continued growth in both marine and fitness segments to sustain momentum.
