On September 19, a rainy opening to game day in Champaign gave way to a mostly cloudy, warm, and humid afternoon of football at Gies Memorial Stadium for the Central Southern Illinois vs. Illinois matchup. The Illini will have to push through any late-game fatigue for the third consecutive week. The best-case scenario for the Illini is building an early lead against Southern Illinois, allowing them to rely on backups and younger players to close out the game. However, the regulars may also benefit from additional snaps.

The Illinois run game, featuring both running backs and the offensive line, could use improvement. Offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. is seeking more explosive plays, even though running backs coach Tyrone Wheatley did not seem enthusiastic when asked about it, citing Lunney's prior discussions on the subject. The defense also faces criticism, as defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck acknowledged that tackling was "darn good" last week against Duke, but it might have been better than in the season opener against UAB.

Nonetheless, the Illini have never lost to an FCS opponent, so it is a clear opportunity for them to play a "get right" game, especially with a crucial trip to Ohio State looming next week. Any issues that need addressing will have to be worked out during today's game, as next Saturday's matchup might not present the same opportunity.
