Gachagua responds to women leaders accusing him of attacking female politicians

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua addressed allegations from female politicians who accused him of targeting women leaders in Kenya. During a speaking engagement in Kansas City on September 19, 2026, Gachagua defended himself against the accusations, stating that his criticism is based on the actions and leadership of the political figures, not their gender.

He emphasized that he campaigned for many of these women, not as women, but as leaders. Gachagua cited Susan Kihika as an example, noting that Kihika presented herself as a leader during her campaign for the Nakuru governorship, rather than solely as a woman. He defended his support for women in politics, asserting that his support is based on leadership credentials, integrity, transparency, and accountability, rather than gender.

Gachagua maintained that women play a vital role in Kenya's development, serving as drivers of the economy, and that he works closely with numerous women leaders. He accused the women leaders criticizing him of not condemning the abductions and killings of young people during the 2024 protests, further defending his stance against gender-based criticism.
