FreeBSD on Aoostar WTR Pro NAS

The AOOSTAR WTR Pro Ryzen edition NAS ticks all the boxes for a small-scale, energy-efficient solution to accommodate NVMe and SATA storage in a compact form factor. The case is crafted from metal, ensuring durability, and it fits comfortably within a 10U rack space. RAM and NVMe slots are easily accessible via screws, and the numbered slots and ID visibility in the OS eliminate any confusion during setup.

The SATA disks can be accessed from the front, with a magnetized front cover to conceal the caddies and LEDs. While the SATA disks require a tool-less mechanism, the 2.5-inch disks necessitate a screw-fastening process, which may be slightly less user-friendly. The default fan is quite loud and produces a low-pitched sound, but users can tune the system using powertop and auto-tune features, resulting in a more energy-efficient setup.

The default power usage is roughly 28W, but with proper tuning, the power consumption can drop significantly, reaching as low as 8W on Debian 13. The system supports various operating systems, including FreeBSD, Linux Alpine, and Debian 13, providing flexibility for users with different preferences.
