Five Killed, Two Critically Injured as Gunmen Attack Friday Market in Plateau State

A deadly attack has erupted at a Friday market in Mangu, a town located 52 miles south of Jos in Plateau State, leaving five people dead and two critically injured. The shooting took place around 8:30 p.m. in the market's section where perishable goods are sold, as traders and buyers were wrapping up their day's work. According to witnesses, the armed assailants entered the market and opened fire indiscriminately, causing panic among the crowd and prompting hundreds to flee the area, leaving behind their possessions.

Two injured victims are currently receiving emergency treatment at a nearby hospital. The scene has been described as chaotic, with victims suffering from gunshot wounds to their abdomen and lower limbs while attempting to escape the attack. A resident who witnessed the incident noted that people who were waiting for vehicles to take them home were caught off guard by the sudden gunfire.

The local development association in Mangu had recently raised concerns over the ongoing insecurity in the region, stating that over 750 of its members have been killed in terror-related attacks over the past three years. Despite these warnings, threats against communities persist, even with repeated calls for intervention. Security agencies have not yet issued an official statement, but emergency responders and community volunteers are currently working to secure the area and provide support to the affected families.

The high levels of fear among residents are evident as rescue efforts continue to evacuate the injured and recover bodies from the scene.
