Fever's Mitchell surprised by postgame party after setting WNBA scoring record in win at Toronto

TORONTO (AP) — Kelsey Mitchell scored 33 points to set a WNBA season scoring record in a 103-85 victory over the Toronto Tempo on Friday night. Mitchell's 3-pointer in the third quarter helped her break A’ja Wilson's season record of 1,021 points, which she set in 2024. Mitchell has scored 1,034 points this season, extending her WNBA record of scoring at least 20 points in 25 consecutive games.

After entering the locker room without realizing the celebration, Mitchell was surprised by the confetti and teammates’ greeting. "Then, out of nowhere, everybody started coming my way, and I was like 'Oh,'" Mitchell said. Her teammate, Caitlin Clark, praised Mitchell's historic season, saying "It's probably not talked about enough, especially in my opinion."

Mitchell entered the game averaging 25 points, with A’ja Wilson averaging 26.1 points this season. White, Mitchell's coach, emphasized the unprecedented nature of Mitchell's performance, stating "I hope that we don't take it for granted that what we're witnessing is some unprecedented stuff." Clark, who also scored 28 points and had 14 assists in her return to action after the women's FIBA World Cup, highlighted Mitchell's historic performance as the 10th time this season she scored 25 or more points and had 10 or more assists, a feat matched by only one other player in WNBA history.
