Explosions reported near Russia’s Caspian Flotilla base in Kaspiysk

Drones launched multiple explosions near Russia's Republic of Dagestan overnight into September 19, with the incidents reported in and around Kaspiysk, a crucial naval base situated on the Caspian Sea. Ukrainian sources, including Exilenova+ and Supernova monitoring channels, confirmed both drone activity and explosions in the region.

Local inhabitants also noted that air defenses were active in Kaspiysk. The extent of the attack's impact and the targeted facility remain unclear as Russian authorities have not released information on the consequences. Kaspiysk is a significant naval and logistics center for Russia, housing units utilized by the Caspian Flotilla, a naval unit capable of deploying Kalibr cruise missiles.

Earlier, Ukraine's Defense Forces struck the Makhachkala Commercial Seaport in Dagestan overnight into September 10, with the General Staff later validating the incident. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukrainian forces had targeted eight Russian infrastructure facilities in six regions, including the Makhachkala port in Dagestan, an oil refinery in Yamalo-Nenets region, and other sites in Moscow, Voronezh, Astrakhan, and Bryansk.

Kaspiysk is Russia's sole ice-free deep-water port on the Caspian Sea and serves as a vital transport and logistics hub, particularly for routes connecting Russia and Iran. Ukraine has previously targeted Russian naval assets in Kaspiysk, with a strike on a Project 22800 Karakurt-class small missile ship reported on May 7. Additionally, Ukrainian forces conducted strikes against Russian naval vessels at the same base in May.
