Eviction notice leaves retired, serving railway workers in Kumasi in limbo

In Kumasi, retired and serving railway workers occupying bungalows on railway lands at Adum are facing an eviction notice from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA). The affected residents, some of whom have lived in the enclave for over 30 years, are in a state of distress as they fear being rendered homeless if the eviction is enforced without alternative arrangements.

These workers, who have dedicated their lives to the Ghana Railway Corporation, now the Ghana Railway Company Limited, are demanding clarification on the ownership and status of the land before any action is taken. The KMA has given the residents three months to vacate the premises, citing concerns over easy access by emergency services.

However, residents question the basis for the eviction, pointing out that the government has assured them that railway lands and assets are not for sale. The KMA, in response, dismissed claims of a private sale and emphasized the exercise is for public safety and security, particularly following a recent fire outbreak in the area.
