Drone incidents near UK military sites rise sharply

British military installations were struck by over 300 drone incidents within a year, as reported by UK media on August 2026. The Independent newspaper recorded 340 security breaches involving drones near or over British defence sites during the 12-month period ending in August 2026. This marked a significant increase from the 250 incidents reported in 2025 and the 126 incidents recorded in the previous year.

The UK defence ministry did not disclose the identity of those responsible for the drone activity. However, armed forces minister Louise Sandher-Jones emphasized that the government was treating the threat posed by hostile drones to defence sites with the utmost seriousness. The rise in incidents is partly attributed to enhanced monitoring and reporting following the establishment of restricted airspace zones around 44 strategic military sites in February.

The UK and its allies remain vigilant against potential threats, and any aggression towards the UK and its allies will not be tolerated, according to a ministry spokesperson. The figures were released a day after Russia summoned the UK's charge d'affaires in response to what Moscow described as an "escalation" in arms supplies to Ukraine.

Russia warned that British military facilities in Ukraine used to launch strikes against Russian territory would be considered legitimate targets.
