Demons claim top spot as Cats maintain winning ways

Melbourne continues their undefeated run following a 34-point triumph over Carlton. The Demons secured the win at the expense of Georgia Gall, who left the field with an ankle injury in the third quarter. Geelong recorded their fifth consecutive victory after defeating Collingwood by 41 points. Melbourne remains the only unbeaten team after six rounds of the AFLW season, delivering a commanding 34-point victory over Carlton at Casey Fields.

However, the Demons might face consequences from Saturday's 8.10 (58) to 3.6 (24) win, with Gall's injury potentially impacting their performance. A day prior to the Blues' loss, Hawthorn secured an unexpected victory over North Melbourne, prompting the Demons to aim for a 6-0 (win-loss) start to their campaign. The Blues displayed resilience in the opening half, but Melbourne capitalized on four consecutive goals in the third quarter to clinch the victory.

Midfielder Olivia Purcell (26 disposals) led Melbourne's effort with two majors, while Jorja Livingstone scored her first goal of the season in the final quarter. Tyla Hanks (32 disposals, one goal) also made a significant impact. For Geelong, Aishling Moloney orchestrated a goal-of-the-year contender in a 14.6 (90) to 7.7 (49) win over Collingwood at Victoria Park.

The Cats (5-1) secured a 31-point lead into the final break, thanks to six goals in a dynamic third quarter. Moloney's crucial goal contributed to the team's fifth consecutive win. The Cats' midfield was outstanding, with Nina Morrison (30 disposals), Mikayla Bowen (29 disposals), and Georgie Prespakis (12 clearances) contributing greatly.

Moloney and Chloe Scheer each scored three and four majors respectively. Despite the loss, the Magpies maintained their winless record (0-6) but experienced a highlight when Olivia Lewis, debuting from Melbourne Mavericks' Super Netball, scored a goal on her AFLW debut. Lewis joined the Magpies as a late call-up due to teammate Bri Davey's illness.
