Delhi and Dhaka look at November dates for Tarique Rahman’s India visit

Delhi and Dhaka are discussing November dates for Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s planned visit to India, in an effort to mend their strained relations. This potential bilateral visit was initially set for August, but was postponed due to backlash over former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s remarks during a media interview with India.

Rahman, who assumed office in February after Bangladesh’s elections, has been trying to reschedule the visit, which would also align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s schedule. The Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka, Dinesh Trivedi, is facilitating the conversation. Meanwhile, the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi, currently headed by M Riaz Hamidullah, is set to be led by Asad Alam Siam.

The formal agreements and responses to Bangladesh's extradition demands for Hasina are still pending approval by the Indian government. Tensions persist, with Hasina’s public appearances in India being a major obstacle for Bangladesh, which is seeking her extradition. The two nations are negotiating a mutually beneficial relationship, focusing on bilateral and security concerns.
