Croatian climber fined RM25,000 for illegal Mount Kinabalu entry

KOTA KINABALU - Croat mountain climber Mauro Persic has been fined the maximum RM25,000 for illegally entering Mount Kinabalu. The 46-year-old paid the fine after being informed of the offence and the penalties under the Parks Enactment 1984 (Amendment 2024) by Sabah Parks enforcement officers. The proceedings took place at the Operations Control Centre of the Operations and Enforcement Office at Sabah Parks headquarters in Kota Kinabalu.

He was released following the payment of the fine, with all aspects of the case concluded. Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin commented that Sabah Parks had also notified the Ranau police for record-keeping and any subsequent actions. Earlier in the month, Persic entered Mount Kinabalu through the Mesilou River via an unauthorized route without a permit, resulting in leg and rib injuries.

Over 40 personnel from various agencies were part of a five-day search and rescue operation following his report to authorities. Persic has since expressed regret and acknowledged his lack of proper consideration before attempting the climb.
